Program Note

This work is written based on the two beautiful melodies composed by the two students from the Fairview Elementary School, Bloomington, Indiana. Although these two melodies are not strictly relevant, I still properly combine them into a new piece. The first section brings the one tune out. The second section, which is in a faster tempo, introduces the other theme. Both the melodies are divided into fragments and go throughout the piece in the development section. Then, the energy and intensity go higher, but in the end, a Jazz fragment interrupts the atmosphere, ending up this work in a humorous way.

大家好！今天想與各位分享一首小曲子，它的標題是：《智慧的旅人》。這首作品是以兩位就讀於費爾維尤國小的小學生所創作的旋律作為基礎，而後再逐漸編寫而成的。以下是這兩段旋律之樂譜：必須說，一開始連筆者也不知道該怎麼將這兩段旋律融合於同一首作品中。後來，才想到利用「並置」的方法加以組合。以下這邊播放的是完成後的演出錄音：

雖然這兩段旋律並不嚴格相關，但作曲者仍然將它們合適地組合成一首新樂曲。樂曲之第一部分分別介紹了第一段旋律與第二段旋律。在樂曲之第二部分，兩段旋律逐漸片段化，並在整個段落中進行發展。緊接著，能量和強度會更高，但最終，爵士樂碎片會打斷氣氛，以幽默的方式結束此樂曲。

Program Note

This work consists of two songs, which are composed based on the two poems, “My Voice” and “Tædium Vitæ,” by the Irish poet Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900).

I. My Voice by Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900)

Within this restless, hurried, modern world
We took our hearts’ full pleasure – You and I,
And now the white sails of our ship are furled,
And spent the lading of our argosy.

But all this crowded life has been to thee
No more than lyre, or lute, or subtle spell
Of viols, or the music of the sea
That sleeps, a mimic echo, in the shell.

II. Tædium Vitæ by Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900)

To stab my youth with desperate knives, to wear
This paltry age’s gaudy livery,
To let each base hand filch my treasury,
To mesh my soul within a woman’s hair,
And be mere Fortune’s lackeyed groom,—I swear

I love it not! these things are less to me
Than the thin foam that frets upon the sea,
Less than the thistle-down of summer air
Which hath no seed: better to stand aloof
Far from these slanderous fools who mock my life

Knowing me not, better the lowliest roof
Fit for the meanest hind to sojourn in,
Than to go back to that hoarse cave of strife
Where my white soul first kissed the mouth of sin.

Program Note

Shakespeare famously said “All the world’s a stage…” This work posits that life is a play, and people are both actors and directors in their own stories. The first section communicates the audience experience of watching a drama. This leads, in subsequent sections, to a process of enlightenment as the audience realizes they are also actors, and are being watched by others.
